Makuru is a town west of Naivasha. Modern, with all the amenities, but not especially charming. Too much traffic and too many panhandlers at different degrees of aggressiveness. In one open market I felt actively uncomfortable, people were staring and calling me names (mzungu, white guy). But in most other places people were they usual welcoming Kenyan. Karibu!
Maybe it’s related to people in this region being fervently Christian. Some trucks write “long vehicle” ontheir side, others “glory to god”. Schools have names like “mountain of deliverance”, whatever that means. Even my super helpful and friendly hotel (Rock Hyrax) has a bible reference as its wifi password. Check out their Central Park dedication below, that’s the spirit.
Menengai crater in the African Rift Valley is one of the largest calderas in the world, formed only 8000 years ago in a giant explosion. Steam is still rising from the floor. The view from the rim is endless, the opposite side of the caldera is 8-12km away.
