Hell’s Gate is a national park near Naivasha without any predators. That means you don’t need the protection of a safari vehicle, a bicycle works. They rent them out at the park entrance. It’s a hot, dusty, and hilly ride but the sights are fantastic and you get really close to zebras and other animals. And monkeys, if you don’t guard your picnic food. Monkeys understand long sticks.

In the park is the Hell’s Gate Gorge, a long deeply cut river canyon. People have drowned here in flash floods from the mountains, but this is the dry season so the river was a trickle, fed by steaming hot waterfalls. There is still volcanic activity here. The trail ends at a Rift Valley viewpoint; Kenya is part of the Rift Valley system that runs for over 6000km through Africa and also includes the Red Sea.
