This is a large lake in the southwest of Uganda. Its maximum depth is said to be 900 meters, but Wikipedia is not so sure about that. There are 29 islands, including one where unmarried pregnant women were banished. It’s called Punishment Island and it’s not much larger than my living room. Punishment indeed.

Hiking along the lakeshore is far more difficult than anticipated. What OpenStreetMap calls roads are often deeply rutted trails, in two cases resembling a pile of rocks nearly a hundred meters high and half a meter wide. Slippery too. Breaking a leg in this remote place just wouldn’t do.

The curious bird is a ctested crane, Uganda’s national bird.
