Kampala is the capital of Uganda. It’s a large and busy modern city, with chaotic but not overwhelming traffic. (Well, it’s Sunday.) The central matatu bus terminal is the largest I have ever seen, and it’s one of several.

The king’s palace is still in use but the grounds can be visited. The king’s Mercedes, destroyed by the bloodthirsty dictator Idi Amin, is on display, as are Idi Amin’s torture chambers that nobody left alive.

The oldest part of Kampala is now the site of the Gaddafi Mosque, finished in 2006. It can be visited, and I could climb the minaret with a guide. 20% of Uganda’s population is Muslim.
