Cape Town

The banner image is the Malayan quarter, one of the oldest parts of Cape Town and known for its brightly colored houses. That exact photo is one of Cape Town’s signature postcard pictures. Unlike Johannesburg, Cape Town has proper attractions and that’s one of them.

Cape Town is also quite hilly, allowing proper views of Table Mountain. The first fort built by the Dutch East Indian Company no longer exists, but there’s a 400 year old new one nearby with proper bastions and a bright yellow interior that houses a number of museums. This is also a part of town where it’s not safe to walk alone, but the city is paying for security guards everywhere who walked with me.

Cape Town’s old harbor is now essentially a giant modern mall, very popular with the locals but it doesn’t feel particularly African. All the usual mostly European brands are here, and restaurants – I had a zebra steak here. Zebra tastes like pork with a hint of venison, and is very tender. They also offer crocodile and other meats.
