This is one of the great African protected parks, and safari destinations. It’s large, over 20,000 square kilometers and again that much in neighboring Mozambique. I joined a jeep tour and traveled over 250km in the park, getting within a few km of the border to Mozambique.
Lots of elephants, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, and buffalos. Hippos are hard to see (got one though, picturesquely yawning), and even though we started before sunrise, we saw no lions or leopards. Well, scroll down a little in this blog and there will be lion photos from Tanzania…
It’s the end of the dry season, and the ground and mist vegetation is brownish gray. Many trees and bushes look like bone piles because of their many white, vicious thorns. As usual on safaris, we cannot leave the vehicle except in designated rest stops. It was surprisingly cold, I was wearing a padded down jacket.
