Nungwi is at the north end of Zanzibar island, Paje is near the southeast end. To get there it’s necessary to connect in Zanzibar City, which involves a long motorcycle ride because each line has its own bus station. The “bus” to Paje was really a Thai-style songthaew, a truck with two facing benches along the sides. I got the front seat next to the driver, jackpot.
Paje is similar but more relaxed and friendlier than Kendwa and Nungwi. They have strong tides – when I arrived the sea was hundreds of meters away from the hotel; in the evening the waves were lapping at the restaurant terrace. (The banner image above is real and not processed btw.)
Walked to Bwejuu, a village a few km to the north along the beach. Looks the same as other villages I had seen before. It’s odd how clearly the boundary between the tourist resorts and the locals is here, I got the impression that they don’t get many tourists walking through their village. The children were excited.
