One would think I’d have enough hiking yesterday, so today I went all in and visited the Trou en Fer, a deep canyon with a waterfall. Trou en Fer means Iron hole; the water carries iron and colors the walls red.
Getting to the viewpoint is hard. It’s 9km on narrow, rocky often very steep (25-30%) trails. The last few km are easier, they built wooden paths over the forest floor. One critical section was closed because the path collapsed due to water damage; I won’t tell whether I used it anyway. And on the way back one has to use the exact same trails. Downhill is harder.
The views are gorgeous pretty much all the way. The interior of La Rénion is all mountains, and here are some of the most impressive. The banner image shows the Trou en Fer near the center from above, the nearest one can get to it.
And to think I could have spared myself all the exertions and go floating weightlessly among the fish along the sea wall… Worth it!
