Back in Skopje

Spent sone time walking the bazaar, which is really a tangle of pedestrianized alleys filled with tourist shops, cafés, and jewellery shops, but still manages to look pleasant and quiet. At the western side is Skopje’s fortress, which is really just the original bastions and watch towers with a fantastic view of the city.

The modern part of Skopje is busy and doesn’t have a lot of sights, due to the Yugoslavian war and a huge earthquake in 1963. There are no trains ans no metro. After the earthquake, the UK donated double-decker buses, but they didn’t last long because in the UK they drive on the left. Then they bought Chinese buses, with predictable results – I saw one with its engine on fire myself. Traffic is madness.
